ADVERTISING
HOW TO SUCCEED

Advertising

Today’s Methods

Where television was once the premier media of choice, this position is now being eroded by the growth in internet usage.

The price charged for internet advertising relates directly to the type of content and the number of hits that the website receives. Another important form of advertising is in the use of emails.

Effective exposure at minimal cost is the basis of unpaid, or word-of-mouth, advertising. Personal recommendations or endorsements are particularly popular. Another ingenious method is associating a brand with a commonly used noun. Good examples of this are: Kleenex = tissue, Xerox = photocopier, Hoover = vacuum cleaner.

In 1998, the first paid downloadable content was made available on mobile phones and, within two years, mobile advertising was made available in Finland. Since then, this potent form of advertising has mushroomed.

A popular form of mobile ad is based on SMS, or short message service, and it has become the largest data application in the world. The benefit of SMS text messages is that people can correspond wherever they are and they can be used very effectively in a viral (word-of-mouth) campaign and build a database of prospects. An interstitial advertisement is a form of advertising which takes place whilst the page is loading.

More advanced mobile ads include coupons, banner ads, video messages, MMS pictures and adventure games. The 2D barcode, which replaces the need to do any typing of web addresses, uses the camera feature of modern phones to gain immediate access to web content.

A recent form of online advertising that shows potential is social network advertising which uses the geographical information provided by the user to build the database of the site.
